Xcel Energy Inc. has switched on a key element of the massive, $1 billion project to shut down coal-fired power plants in the Denver area and switch to using more natural gas to generate electricity.
The power utility, Colorado's largest, this week started operations on a new $110 million, 34-mile pipeline to carry natural gas to new gas-fired generating units at the Cherokee Generating Station in north Denver.
