A new study on air emissions from oil and gas wells found higher health hazards for people living within 500 feet of a well.
In Colorado, state officials mandate new wells be at least 500 feet from existing homes and 1,000 feet of “high occupancy” buildings such as schools or hospitals. But local governments often have smaller buffer zones, permitting new homes to be built inside that 500-foot perimeter.
