Over the last seven years, Colorado’s largest gas and electric utility has undergone a massive shift in its power portfolio.
Xcel Energy Inc. has shut down 1,054 megawatts’ worth of coal-fired power around metro Denver to meet requirements of a 2010 state clean-air law, replacing that coal with natural gas to run its generators along with wind and solar power.
But those changes were mostly out of sight of its Colorado urban customers — done behind the walls of big power plants, or far away…
